2013 The story so far...

So, my excuse is I've been training 13 days out of every 14 for the last 40 weeks, working hard and being a good husband and dad...and that's why I haven't updated my blog for ages. In fact, I just had to check and the last time I updated was before my Lanzarote Camp in February!! So I thought I would give a synopsis on the year so far which has been going very well, which will pave the way for some articles about my plans and for Ironman UK which is shockingly only 6 weeks away. So first up was my Lanzarote Training camp.  I'd never done anything like this before and in a week did over 30 hours of training, 350km of hard Lanzarote biking, over 5000m of climbing on ...

2013 Race Calendar Confirmed

January 5, 2013 at 21:46

After many weeks of considering options and logistics of various races in the build up to Ironman UK 2013, my race calendar has finally been signed, sealed and confirmed. Unfortunately due to logistical and scheduling reasons, the Outlaw Half doesn't now fit into that build up, but two other Middle Distance events are there, the brand new Bedford Priory Middle distance event that covers all the training roads I use and the 3rd running of the Cotswold 113 that I last did in 2011. First triathlon of the year is the usual opener at the Bedford Sprint where I will be going for an all time PR in this race I've done so many times. Before that I'll be opening my competitiv...

Following a very busy festive period, I've finally found the time to put a few thoughts down about my return to structured training over the last three months - the beginning of my journey to the 2013 Ironman UK, just 7 months to go until race day. After entering IMUK in September, my original plan was to take it easy until Christmas, then go hard in the new year.  This went by the wayside once I engaged with Coach Cox in mid-October.  His (correct) approach was to forget taking it easy and get some miles in. This has worked well, and as well as increasing my FTP from down near 200W to up nearer 300W, I've also lost over 3 stone since September 5th.  Much more impor...

Weighty Matters

A Healthy Stir Fry!!A Healthy Stir Fry!!

So I've made no secret of the fact that I've been overweight in triathlon in the past and having entered the hilly Ironman UK in 2013, I know that however good my training gets, my major performance limiter is weight and specifically storage of excess fat. Cycling, especially when you start to go up hill, is all about power to weight ratio – and excess weight gets to the point where no amount of power will shift it very fast.  With running too, the leaner you are, the quicker you go.  So over the next 6 months I need to shift lumber and achieve something I've never done before - keep my training up while still losing a significant amount of weight. In the past, I've...
