A new Bike route, a new plan and some new motivation!!

So two significant things have occurred in the last few days...which has also lead to a third!! The new bike route for the Outlaw has been released at last. This uses the first loop from last year's course, then back to East Bridgeford as if on the last loop, but instead out for two new loops in the quiet roads to the South East of the original course. On paper, I'm liking the look of this, as it keeps the traditional loop, but is only once up Oxton bank (phew!!), then into much quieter roads, before back to Holme Pierrepont.  Nothing is easy that lasts 112 miles after a 2.4 miles swim, but the new loop, while still rolling, looks slightly easier than the original l...

The hardest thing for most age group Ironman athletes is getting time to train, while still dedicating yourself to spouse, kids, work, family, social life etc. It's easy to sacrifice one or more of those for good training time, but it's a fact that as Ironman times get faster, the divorce rate goes up, and for me at least my wife and my two boys (aged 4 and 2) come first, and as the only wage earner in our family of four, work has always needed to come second. Like many Ironman athletes, my training therefore comes either very early in the morning (5am alarm time Fri-Sun throughout the summer), training in the evening or squeezing a workout in at lunch. This has been a slow and steady first week, but a great start to a long journey to July 1st. Due to the stars not aligning and other non-triathlon related circumstances, I didn't manage to fit a swim in this week and that will probably be next week too. But I did manage 3.5hrs bike and 2 hrs run in the last week and crucially after my long bike and long run session this weekend felt pretty good - well, a lot better than I did at the start of the week. I'm not that bothered about missing the swimming this early - swimming only makes up 10% of the Ironman overall time on average as opposed to the 50% bike and 40% run, so there's plenty of time to get that right, an...

Outlaw MedalsOutlaw Medals

My Outlaw Training programme started today with a 90 min bike ride.  There's now less than 6 months till race day - one way or another in 6 months time it'll all be over. I've purposely not done much training at all for the last 6-8 weeks to ensure I hit today fresh and ready to commit to my Ironman plan.  Eating has been a bit out of control over Christmas but purposely to get to the point where I'm now sick of food and really want to eat healthily now and not crave the chocolate and takeaway from the last month.
